MEMORANDUM

Single Channel Video, HD, 5:58 min

Memorandum is a short essay film that explores the formal qualities of missing archival information in records from the CoIntelPro action taken against the Black Panther Party and other Leftist organizations by the FBI. Redactions, or Blacking Out as they are professionally referred to in user manuals, are the formal representation of power, excluding information from public knowledge. Memorandum seeks to bring into the question the value of missing information from both the archives and from artistic forms by breaking down the different qualities of these black squares. Installed as a full wall projection it extends its play on blacking out by transforming the projected light into an experience for the audience, as they move between loneliness in the dark to overwhelming brightness.
